Both lug and wafer butterfly valves are quarter-turn valves used to regulate or isolate flow. However, their body design, installation method, and application boundaries differ significantly. Use this guide to make an informed decision for your piping system.
A lug-style butterfly valve has threaded inserts (lugs) on both flanges of the valve body. This allows the valve to be bolted directly to the piping flanges, and it can be used in dead-end service — meaning one side of the pipeline can be removed without draining the entire system.
Best for: Dead-end applications, maintenance-heavy lines, fire protection systems, and upstream oil & gas.
A wafer butterfly valve is designed with a thin, compact body that fits between two pipe flanges. Bolts or studs pass through the flange holes and sandwich the valve in place. It does not have its own threaded lugs, so it relies entirely on the pipe flanges for support.
Best for: Low-pressure general service, HVAC, water treatment, and cost-sensitive installations where dead-end service is not required.
| Feature | Lug Butterfly Valve | Wafer Butterfly Valve |
|---|---|---|
| Dead-End Service | ✅ Yes — up to full-rated pressure | ❌ Not without additional supports / flanges |
| Installation | Bolts thread into lugs; one-side disassembly possible | Sandwiched between flanges; full system drain needed for removal |
| Pressure Rating | Up to 300 psi (PN16 / Class 150 / Class 300) | Typically up to 200 psi (PN10 / PN16) |
| Face-to-Face Dimension | Thicker (API 609 Category A / B) | Thinner (ISO 5752 / EN 558 series) |
| Maintenance Convenience | ✅ Downstream piping can be removed without draining upstream | ❌ Entire spool must be depressurized |
| Weight per Unit (6") | ~18–22 lbs (8–10 kg) | ~12–15 lbs (5.5–7 kg) |
| Relative Cost (1–10) | 7 (higher fabrication cost) | 4.5 (economical, less material) |
| Common Standards | API 609, ASME B16.34, ISO 5211 | API 609, EN 593, AWWA C504 |

“We switched from a low-cost wafer valve to Thriveon’s lug butterfly valve for our dead-end fire main. Installation was straightforward, and we eliminated annual gasket leaks. Our maintenance team is genuinely happy.”
“The technical data Thriveon provided for their lug vs wafer comparison helped us save $7,200 on a single skid project. We now standardize on lug for all isolation points.”

All valves are pressure-tested at 1.5× rated pressure and come with full material traceability.
“We’ve been importing lug butterfly valves from China for 6 years. Thriveon is the first supplier that delivered consistent quality — no pinholes, proper disc centering, and the lug holes matched our flanges perfectly. I recommend them to any US buyer.”
James H. – Mechanical Engineer, California Fire Protection“The wafer valves we ordered for our HVAC retrofit were delivered 3 days early. The epoxy coating was flawless, and the price was 22% lower than our previous Italian supplier without sacrificing quality. We’ve already placed 2 repeat orders.”
Maria G. – Supply Chain Manager, New York MEP Contractor“I run a valve distribution company in Texas. Thriveon’s lug valves have the best price-to-performance ratio I’ve found. Their engineering team helped me select the right valve for a tricky 300 psi application. Highly responsive.”
Tom R. – President, Gulf Coast Valve Supply“We were skeptical about importing valves from a new supplier. But Thriveon sent us a free sample kit (lug + wafer) and we tested them for 3 months. No leaks, good cycle life. We now use them for all our water treatment skids.”
Sarah L. – Operations Director, Michigan Industrial Water Systems“The documentation (pressure test reports, material certs, MTC) was thorough and easy to submit to our client. That level of professionalism is rare from overseas suppliers. Keep it up.”
