A wafer-style butterfly valve sits between two flanges and uses through-bolts to clamp it in place. It is more compact and cost-effective for general isolation. A lug-style valve has threaded inserts (lugs) that allow it to be bolted directly to one flange, enabling downstream maintenance without shutting down the entire line. For dead-end service, lug type is recommended.
