In a trunnion-mounted ball valve, the ball is mechanically fixed by top and bottom trunnions, which absorb the thrust from line pressure. This design allows for lower operating torque, smoother operation at high pressure (Class 600+), and reduced seat wear. Floating ball valves rely on line pressure to push the ball into the seats, which increases torque at higher pressures and limits their use to lower-pressure classes (typically Class 300 and below). For critical, high-pressure, or large-diameter applications (NPS 4+ / DN100+), a trunnion ball valve is the standard choice.
