A Y strainer has a body shaped like the letter "Y," with the screen chamber angled at 45° or 90° to the pipeline. It is ideal for horizontal or vertical lines where space is limited and for smaller particle retention (20–400 mesh). A basket strainer has a larger dirt-holding capacity and is used for high-flow, high-dirt-load applications. For most industrial plumbing Y strainer applications — protecting pumps, valves, and heat exchangers — a Y strainer offers the best balance of low pressure drop, compact size, and easy cleaning.

The mesh size depends on the particle size you need to remove. General guidelines: 20–40 mesh (coarse) for protecting pumps from large debris; 60–100 mesh (medium) for heat exchangers and control valves; 200–400 mesh (fine) for metering devices and small nozzles. For most industrial plumbing Y strainer applications in water and steam lines, 20–40 mesh is the standard. We recommend perforated plate (1/16" to 1/4" holes) for heavy debris loads, and woven wire mesh for finer filtration. Cleaning frequency depends on the debris load in your system. In clean water systems, cleaning may be needed only every 6–12 months. In older pipes with scale or sediment, it could be weekly or monthly. Key indicators that cleaning is needed: increased pressure drop across the strainer (monitor with pressure gauges), reduced flow rate, or visible debris during blowdown. Thriveon Y strainers feature a blowdown connection (NPT or flanged) that allows quick cleaning without removing the screen. We recommend installing a differential pressure gauge for timely maintenance.
