A foot valve uses a spring-loaded disc or poppet combined with a fine mesh strainer. When the pump operates, suction lifts the disc allowing water to flow up. When the pump stops, the spring and backpressure seal the disc, trapping water in the suction line and preventing the pump from losing its prime.

A foot valve is a subset of check valves. The key difference is the integrated strainer screen. A standard check valve prevents backflow only. A foot valve prevents backflow and filters debris, making it specifically designed for pump suction applications.
