A basket strainer has a larger 'bucket' capacity, better suited for liquid lines with heavy debris loads, but it requires more space and is heavier. For most pipeline protection needs (HVAC, water, oil), the Y strainer is the most cost-effective and space-efficient choice.

The mesh size determines the size of particles captured. For general water scale and sand, 20-40 mesh is standard. For finer protection of control valves, 60-100 mesh is recommended.
