For most buried municipal and commercial applications, a flanged gate valve (NRS or OS&Y) or a flanged butterfly valve is recommended. Gate valves provide a straight-through flow path and reliable isolation, while butterfly valves offer lighter weight and faster operation. Standard valves can be buried up to 6 feet (1.8 m) with a valve extension stem and a traffic-rated valve box.
